Controlling Diabetes with Jamaican Cherry and Bitter Gourd

Jamaican cheery leaves are apparently potent to control diabetes mellitus. That is a research result of Dr Ahmad Ridwan and Rakhmi Ramdani on School of Life Sciences and Technology, Bandung Institute of Technology. It is due to flavonoid compound that has antioxidant properties contained within. The antioxidant impedes the damage of cells in langerhans' island in the pancreas where insulin and glucagon which function to regulate carbohydrate metabolism as well as to control the level of blood sugar are produced.

Use Jamaican cheery leaves, not too old nor too young; the 5 leaves from the tip to be precisely. Decoct 50 - 100 g of Jamaican cherry leaves in 1 liter of water. Bring it to boil and only a half left. Drink the decoction twice in a day. In case using dried leaf extract, infuse 2 - 5 g of the extract in 200 ml of water. Within 15 days consuming Jamaican cherry leaf decoction, blood sugar level goes down 35 - 48%.

Such antidiabetc effect of Jamaican cherry leaves works the same as bitter gourd's Momordica canrantia. A research conducted by Herawati of School of Pharmacy, Bandung Institute of Technology has confirmed that the ethanol extract of bitter gourd of dose 2 g per kg of body weight is able to decrease blood sugar level.
